In the early months of 1917 a group of devout Catholics residing in NE Allegan and W Barry Counties set out to build a new church closer to their homes. (They had been traveling 10-13 miles in horse and buggy to attend Mass elsewhere.) Most of these founding families were of Slavic, Croatian, and Bohemian descent, though a few Irish were also settled in the area. In fact, it was one Irish woman (though her name was not officially recorded) who donated the most money.
July 7, 1917 - the small wood-frame church was completed, named SS. Cyril & Methodius and blessed by Rev. A. J. Janicek from Detroit. Mass was celebrated once a month at SS C&M by priests from St. Stanislaus in Hilliards, Michigan, who traveled to the new church by horse and buggy. The priests were given a stipend of $5.00 per Sunday.
Other significant dates:
1938 - SS. Cyril & Methodius became an affiliate parish of the Grand Rapids Diocese. With priests regularly coming from Grand Rapids, a weekly Mass schedule was initiated.
1942 – After an additional half acre was purchased, the original church was expanded, adding both a west wing and basement area.
(In Wayland, St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church was consecrated, celebrating its first Mass on Christmas Day 1942.)
1946 - A large tract of land was purchased from the Weingate family farm. Their wood-framed house became the rectory for SS C&M, and a separate garage and barn were included. Rev. Stephen Kolenic became the first resident pastor of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church.
1950 - The exterior of the church was refinished, adding a new vestibule. The interior seating capacity was increased with expansion to the West wall of the church. A large crucifix was erected in the cemetery. Note: the records and management of the area’s first Catholic Cemetery (behind __##___ on the W. side of Patterson Road,) initially maintained by St. Rose of Lima in Hastings, were transferred to SS. Cyril & Methodius parish office.
1957 - The barn acquired in 1946 was re-roofed and the interior renovated. The barn was christened “Catalpa Hall” and was used for social and recreation events for many years. Fish frys and chicken dinners held at the hall became very popular throughout the area.
1971 – When the new Diocese of Kalamazoo was founded, SS. Cyril & Methodius was transferred to the new Diocese with Paul V. Donovan as Bishop. The church continued to be refurbished and liturgically updated. The 1970’s and 80’s saw new pews and a ramp entrance added. Two stained glass windows were donated by parishioners. (Now installed between the Narthex and Sanctuary.)
1989 - Sister Marie Beaulac was appointed by the Bishop to be a resident Pastoral Administrator. The priest from St. Therese, Wayland, becomes Canonical Pastor for both parishes.
1990 – A Feasibility Study group is formed to consider building a larger church on site.
1992 – The 75th Anniversary celebration of SS. Cyril and Methodius.
1995 – The old barn known as Catalpa Hall was razed. Planning begins for the creation of both a larger worship space with office and classrooms, and an adjacent hall.
2000 – In July, the Diocese of Kalamazoo grants permission to proceed with a capital campaign at SS. Cyril & Methodius to raise funds for a new building.
2002 – Groundbreaking on August 24th to start construction of the new church, with Bishop James Murray of the Diocese of Kalamazoo presiding and blessing the undertaking. The following week, the original old church was lifted and moved back from the road to become a narthex for the new sanctuary.
2003 – The new SS. Cyril & Methodius Church is completed, seating almost 400. The parish now has well over 200 registered families.
2016 – Following many years of continued fundraising by dedicated parishioners, Phase II construction begins to create a large Parish Hall adjacent to the Church.
2017 – Just in time for the centennial, the beautiful new Parish Hall is completed in June, and the large kitchen is outfitted in part by parishioner donations.
July 17, 2017 - Centennial celebrations are held and a book about its 100-year history is published.
